Fire Safety Week Education for Kids: Learn, Play, and Stay Safe

Fire safety week is approaching! Fire safety week occurs Sunday, October 5th- Saturday, October 11th. Fire safety is such an important lesson to teach to our young children and family to be prepared in case of an emergency. The very basic information that we should be teaching to our families is: stop, drop, and roll; crawl low under smoke, and how to check doors for heat.

Our homes tend to have tons of fire hazards that we should be aware of and ensure that they are taken care of properly to avoid a fire emergency. Household items, such as; candles, overloaded outlets, unattended stoves, and plugged in toasters should be motored, unplugged, and de-flamed before leaving the house or going to sleep.

Ensure that our families know about and how to contact our community helpers that will help to save ourselves and our homes during a fire emergency. Help your children to understand how to dial 911 in case of an emergency, where the fire department is, and how fire fighters can help us during an emergency. We should be practicing these emergency plan tactics when our children are young while also ensuring they understand these practices are for emergency situations ONLY.

Below I have put together several activities, printables, games, crafts, unit studies, and book recommendations to help educate our families on the importance of fire safety.

In-Home Fire Safety Activities

  • Escape Plan Practice - we encourage you to draw up your own escape plan for your home and practice your plan to ensure everyone in your home understands what to do in case of a fire

  • Fire Drill at Home - play out a fire drill at home to ensure that your plan plays out smoothly and effectively and everyone gets out of the house "safely"

  • Scavenger Hunt - plan a scavenger hunt with your family to find all of the fire safety tools within your household (fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and exits).
