Summer Reading & Writing Activities for Elementary

Learning doesn't stop in the summer, but it may look a little different. We tend to take a "lighter" approach when it comes to education in the summer. We do a lot more family activities, hikes, outings, and adventuring. While we love our curriculums, novel studies, and worksheets, we also like variety in the way we learn. Below are our favorite "off-road" resources and activities to practice reading and writing during the summer.

Enjoy our FREEBIE below as a bonus resource!

Reading

We love sprinkling in read-alouds all summer long, but we also want some lighter resources and activities to help us practice our literacy skills as well as readin comprehension.

  1. Novel Studies

    1. Novel studies are great for using one book to engage the entire family. Novel studies typically focus on one novel while completing several different accompanying activities, crafts, and more.

    2. Charlotte's Web Novel Study for 3rd-5th Grades is always a favorite summer reading unit!

  2. Magic Tree House Series Companion Packet

The Magic Tree House Series is, by far, one of our favorites to read and re-read. There is so much to be learned from those books and they make wonderful read=alouds.

  1. Reading Comprehension Activities

    1. There are plenty of reading passages and comprehension questions floating around with several different topics. Below is our 3rd-4th Grade workbook!

    2. 3rd & 4th Grade Reading Comprehension Activities Workbook containing 20 daily summer-themed reading passages and comprehension activities

Writing

  1. Writing Prompts

    1. Our go-to for practicing creative writing is with writing prompts!

  1. Writing Workbooks

    1. Workbooks are inexpensive and you can typically find some great filler workbooks to practice handwriting and pencil handling skills in multiple places.

    2. Our Kindergarten Daily Writing Practice Workbook has 20 Days of different letters, words, sentences, and creative activities to trace and write.

    3. Reusable writing workbooks and pads

There are so many wonderful resources out there and some great summer themes and topics to dive into. We hope you find some of these resources helpful to keep learning moving forward this summer.
